Tasting Notes

Source: Entirely produced from vines grown at Pindarie. The Tempranillo is grown on shallow rocky limestone soil to enhance concentration. The Sangiovese is grown on an easterly facing slope consisting of red brown earth and limestone.

Winemaking: The Tempranillo was co-fermented with Sangiovese from the vineyard in small fermenters and later blended with 5% Shiraz. The wine spent only 9 months in aged French oak to ensure upfront fruit flavour and soft, but drying ‘savoury’ tannins. Special care is taken not to over oak the wine to maintain varietal fruit integrity.

Cellaring: Now until 2018

Style: Medium bodied (although the 2008 vintage is a "big" wine)
Our thinking, as we bring together Spanish, Italian and French varieties, is the (theoretical) attraction of a Mediterranean blend. Deep red in colour, intense spicy aromas of cinnamon and pepper from the Tempranillo is well balanced with soft berry fruits from the Sangiovese. A very complex nose which is more evident on the palate where the upfront fruit of the Sangiovese is complemented by the velvet layered tannins of the Tempranillo and Shiraz complementing each other in an intriguing delicious blend. There is a lingering cherry fruit finish which gives the wine long persistence.

Cuisine matching:
Of course an ideal dish evokes southern France, Tuscany or Spain, rich in herbs, olive oil and tomato, but “Bar Rossa” is really a great Mediterranean all-rounder.

Now an established blend with two consecutive years of medal wins.

With this wine we have managed to bring together “a Spaniard, an Italian and a little something French”, with an accent on being Mediterranean. Spain’s Tempranillo, the Sangiovese of Central Italy and Shiraz, which originates in France’s warmer Rhone Valley, are three contrasting but friendly varieties.

Careful planning went into the make up of this medium bodied blend. There is a synergy with the co-fermentation of the low acid Tempranillo (70%) and the high acid Sangiovese (25%). A small amount of Shiraz (5%) was later blended for softening the tannins.

The brand ‘Bar Rossa’ is a name with two meanings; and more than one spelling! The first describes the red soils of the western ridge of the Barossa Valley where Pindarie is located. The second refers to the ‘Battle of Barrosa’ fought during the Iberian Peninsular war in 1811. Colonel William Light named the Barossa Valley after the Andalusian region of Spain where this battle occurred. Pindarie reminds us of the Spanish ‘Barrosa’ with its gentle slopes overlooking the plains below, and the climate at Pindarie is similar to that of a Spanish region with a Mediterranean influence.
